Clearcover is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a car insurance company with a frictionless digital experience and rates that don’t break the bank. The insurer is also known for quick, same-day claims compensation, while other insurers may take weeks.

However, Clearcover is only available in certain states and offers limited coverage options. Also, Clearcover’s small presence compared to insurance giants like GEICO, State Farm, and other top cheap car insurance providers may raise concerns, and it has more customer complaints than average according to third-party sites. That said, the company has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and an A- (excellent) rating for financial stability from A.M. Best, which could reassure customers who are on the fence.

Types of Car Insurance Plans from Clearcover

  • Bodily liability coverage — Most states will require this coverage, so insurance can pay for the other party’s medical expenses if someone gets hurt in an accident you’re at fault for.
  • Property damage liability coverage — If you damage someone’s vehicle in an accident, insurance will pay for their repairs and replacement. Most states will also require you to obtain this coverage.
  • Comprehensive coverage — This insurance will cover non-collision repairs and replacements such as damages resulting from fires, vandalism, or falling objects.
  • Collision coverage — If you hit something or someone else’s car, insurance will pay to repair your vehicle.
  • Personal injury protection — PIP coverage will cover you and your passenger’s medical expenses if you get hurt in an accident, regardless if you’re at fault. This coverage may be helpful if your health insurance coverage is low. No-fault states may require drivers to have PIP coverage.
  • Medical payments coverage — Like PIP coverage, Medpay will cover medical expenses for you and your passengers even if you’re at fault. Medpay can fill in coverage gaps if you don’t have health insurance and max out on your PIP coverage. Medpay is optional in all states.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage — This coverage provides a buffer if another party is at fault in an accident and doesn’t have insurance or doesn’t have enough liability insurance to pay for your medical expenses or property damages.

Additional Coverage Options (Riders)

  • Roadside assistance coverage — If your car breaks down, insurance will pay for emergency services like towing and jumpstarting your car. Roadside assistance coverage will pay for emergency services up to three times per six-month policy period.
  • Rideshare insurance coverage — Clearcover offers this endorsement for those who drive for rideshare companies like Lyft and Uber. However, coverage only applies when the app is on but you haven’t accepted a passenger.
  • Alternative transportation coverage — Clearcover will compensate you for transportation costs for ridesharing services, public transportation, or a car rental while your vehicle receives repairs.

How Much Does Clearcover Car Insurance Cost?

The table below shows that Clearcover’s rates are lower than the industry average across most ages and genders. While Clearcover’s rates are on par with the industry average for teenagers, you may be able to find better rates elsewhere.

Clearcover also offers exceptional rates for those with at-fault accidents and speeding tickets on their record, according to insurance comparison company Insurify. However, those with a DUI can expect higher rates than the industry average with Clearcover.

How to File a Claim With Clearcover

Clearcover’s innovative technology allows for quick claims processing. You may receive compensation in as little as seven minutes.

Clearcover’s claims process is also relatively simple. Submit pictures of your vehicle’s damages and answer a few questions on Clearcover’s mobile app. If you don’t want to file a claim online, call 855-444-1875 to speak to a live representative.

If you aren’t a Clearcover member, you can file a claim against a policyholder by calling 855-444-1875 and selecting option 4. You should have the policyholder’s name, policy number, incident date, and police report number (if applicable) on hand.

Methodology: What Went into Our Clearcover Car Insurance Review

At Personal Finance Insider, we are committed to giving you updated and accurate data so you can confidently shop for an insurance company. Our partnerships don’t influence what we write about in our reviews.

Instead, we review companies based on a variety of factors, including:

  • Affordability of a policy: We compare a policy’s price against the industry standards, the number of discounts available, if there are bundling opportunities and the availability of a telematics rewards program.
  • Quality of a company:  Your car insurance policy is as good as the company offering it. We evaluate a company’s caliber compared to the industry standard by looking at its customer service and financial strength score, the volume of complaints it receives, how quickly it processes claims, and user-friendliness. We also look at the type of agents that work for the company (independent and captive), the availability of its services, and whether their business model integrates ESG practices.
  • Selection of coverages: Consumers may value companies with a wide selection of endorsements and riders to fit their car insurance needs. We note if a company doesn’t offer standard insurance coverages like gap insurance, accident forgiveness, or diminishing deductibles.

See our insurance rating methodology for more details.

How Clearcover Compares

Clearcover vs. GEICO

GEICO is a major provider that’s available nationwide. If you’re a 30-year-old in the market for a full coverage car insurance policy, you can expect to pay around $103 monthly at GEICO. The cost of a policy at GEICO is cheaper than Clearcover at $184 per month GEICO even has an extensive selection of discounts to bring your rates down even more.

GEICO and Clearcover’s coverage offerings are pretty similar. However, while GEICO offers mechanical breakdown insurance and accident forgiveness, Clearcover doesn’t. In contrast, Clearcover offers rideshare insurance while GEICO doesn’t.

Clearcover is best for: Rideshare insurance

GEICO is best for: Price and coverage options

Clearcover vs. Erie Insurance

Erie Insurance insurance costs around $125 per month for a 30-year-old with a full-coverage policy, which is cheaper than a policy at Clearcover. Additionally, Erie Insurance offers excellent customer service, ranking #3 with J.D. Power, and has a low volume of customer complaints. In contrast, Clearcover isn’t listed in J.D. Power’s latest rankings.

Erie’s coverage options are more comprehensive than Clearcover, offering rate lock coverage, gap insurance, and new car replacement. However, if you’re a tech-savvy customer who appreciates an easy-to-use mobile app with quick claims processing, Clearcover is an excellent pick. Plus, Clearcover is offered in 20 states, while Erie only provides its services in 12.

Clearcover is best for: Digital experience, quick claims processing, availability

Erie Insurance is best for: Affordability, coverage options, customer service

Clearcover vs. Amica

30-year-olds with a full-coverage policy can expect to pay $184 with Clearcover and $408 per month with Amica. Shoppers may be reluctant to do business with Amica due to its expensive premiums; however, an Amica policy offers more than Clearcover.

Amica receives high marks in customer service (No.1) with J.D, Power, offers a long list of coverage options, and is available in most states. Plus, you have the potential to earn dividends on your policy, which very few auto insurers offer. Still, if you’re looking for a budget-friendly option without all the bells and whistles of a car insurance policy, Clearcover may be the best pick.

Clearcover is best for: Price

Amica is best for: Availability and coverage options
